What's a Landing Page?

It is a specific page that appears on your site when a potential client lands on it through Google, another Search Engine or an Ad on some site. The Landing Page is usually targeting the targeted traffic arriving on that page through a certain link, or ad. This means the content on that particular Landing Page is tailored to those specific targeted visitors.

There are 2 types of landing pages, one where you list relevant information (Reference Landing Page) and the other is a Transactional Landing Page, and this is where you provide the visitor with a form in an attempt to force them into buying something and in hopes of completing a personal set conversion goal. The Landing Page can guide the new visitor to parts of your site that you're focusing on. If used on a Blog then it can land you additional RSS subscriptions and newsletter sign ups if used right. Landing Pages are a great tool when growing a reader base for your blog, it's like herding sheep.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind when using Landing Pages though:

  • Remember that you want new visitors to either register, buy something or become regular readers, so target your landing page accordingly depending on the desired conversion.

  • Users that end up on Landing Pages are a flight risk! It's true, you have only seconds to grab their attention and force them to click something, anything, so think about adding graphically enhanced buttons to attract a visitor to click in order to lead him to relevant content or where you want to herd them!

  • On your Landing Page, remove as many tabs and buttons from your menu and navigation. This does not mean remove it all, keep it relevant to the Landing Page in question and keep in mind 'what it is you want out of that visitor', where you want them to go, what you want them to click, and work around that in terms of creating a new compact navigation for the Landing Pages.

  • Make sure that at first glance your user can see you know what you're on about. Strengthen your credibility by adding a testimonial or two, maybe a press release, a partner block, make sure your contact details are easy to grab, all this will help in reassuring your visitor.
